Switchboard upgrades — Canning Vale and SE Perth
The single most common job I do. Most Canning Vale, Thornlie and Willetton homes are 25–30 years old with boards that weren't spec'd for today's loads.

What AJ sees on switchboard jobs
The single most-requested upgrade I do across the fleet is a switchboard changeover — the original 1960s-90s board, often asbestos-backed, with ceramic rewireable fuses and no RCDs, replaced with a current-spec board: MCBs on every circuit, RCDs covering power and lighting, properly-rated main switch, certified to AS/NZS 3000:2018. AJ's done hundreds across the metro — the workflow is reliable: power-off coordination with Western Power, careful asbestos handling if the existing board's backed with it, full board build to the customer's circuit count plus headroom for future load, certification and sticker, written sign-off. Most jobs are a single day on-site. EC 9715 licensed, $10M PL, fixed written quote before any work starts — no surprise add-ons. Photo of your existing board: 0415 966 469.
Original boards were spec'd for a fridge, an oven, and a window-rattler aircon. Now they're running ducted reverse-cycle, induction cooktop, pool pump, EV charger, and sometimes a granny-flat fridge too.
The fix isn't a bigger fuse — it's a properly designed upgrade with the right RCDs and load balancing.
What's pushing your board to the limit
What a proper capacity upgrade includes
When your board is fine — and when it needs work
Probably fine
- • Modern board with spare circuits
- • Two or more RCDs already installed
- • No nuisance tripping
- • Not adding major new loads
Time to upgrade
- • Single old RCD or none at all
- • Trips when dryer + AC run together
- • Adding EV, granny flat, or pool
- • Board is full or patched
