How I approach fault finding
Fault finding is detective work. I start at the symptom and work back to the cause, testing each step of the way. The goal is to find the actual problem, not just mask it.
- Listen to the symptoms — when did it start, what triggers it
- Test systematically — isolate circuits, check connections, measure
- Find the root cause — not just the symptom
- Fix it properly — explain what I found, quote the fix, do the work
About fault-finding pricing
I charge by the hour for fault finding because I can't know how long it'll take until I see the problem. Simple faults might take 30 minutes. Intermittent faults in old wiring can take longer. I'll give you an estimate when I see what we're dealing with.
