Electrical fault finding — Canning Vale and SE Perth

Something's not working and you don't know why. Tripping circuits, dead outlets, flickering lights, burning smells. I find the fault and fix it.

Burning smell or sparks? Turn off power at the main switch and call immediately.

Common electrical faults

Most fault-finding calls fall into a few categories. Here's what I typically see:

Circuit keeps tripping
Could be overload, faulty appliance, or wiring fault. I test and isolate the cause.
Dead power points
Power out to one or more outlets? Often a loose connection or failed circuit.
Flickering lights
Could be loose connection, failing fitting, or supply issue. Needs proper diagnosis.
Partial power out
Some circuits working, others not? Usually a supply issue or failed phase.
Burning smell
Urgent. Could be overheating wiring or connection. Turn off power and call.
Hot switches or outlets
Indicates poor connection or overload. Needs inspection before it becomes a fire risk.

How I approach fault finding

Fault finding is detective work. I start at the symptom and work back to the cause, testing each step of the way. The goal is to find the actual problem, not just mask it.

  • Listen to the symptoms — when did it start, what triggers it
  • Test systematically — isolate circuits, check connections, measure
  • Find the root cause — not just the symptom
  • Fix it properly — explain what I found, quote the fix, do the work

About fault-finding pricing

I charge by the hour for fault finding because I can't know how long it'll take until I see the problem. Simple faults might take 30 minutes. Intermittent faults in old wiring can take longer. I'll give you an estimate when I see what we're dealing with.
