RCD safety switch installation — Canning Vale and SE Perth
RCD retrofits, compliance upgrades, and nuisance-tripping fixes. WA requires a minimum of two RCDs — most older homes have one or none.
What's an RCD and why does it matter?
An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety switch that cuts power in milliseconds if it detects current leaking to earth — like through you. It's the difference between a shock and a fatality.
WA regulations now require a minimum of two RCDs protecting all power and lighting circuits. Older homes often have just one RCD, or none at all.
When RCD work is needed
WA RCD requirements
- • All homes: Minimum two RCDs required
- • All circuits: Power and lighting must be protected
- • Rentals: Must comply before tenant moves in
- • Sales: Must comply at settlement
About nuisance tripping
If your RCD trips randomly or when you run certain appliances, there's usually a reason. Common causes are:
- Faulty appliance leaking current to earth
- Too many circuits on one RCD (cumulative leakage)
- Moisture in outdoor fittings or junction boxes
- Degraded wiring insulation (older homes)
I can fault-find the cause and fix it — whether that's redistributing circuits across multiple RCDs or tracking down the actual fault.
