RCD safety switch installation — Canning Vale and SE Perth

RCD retrofits, compliance upgrades, and nuisance-tripping fixes. WA requires a minimum of two RCDs — most older homes have one or none.

What's an RCD and why does it matter?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety switch that cuts power in milliseconds if it detects current leaking to earth — like through you. It's the difference between a shock and a fatality.

WA regulations now require a minimum of two RCDs protecting all power and lighting circuits. Older homes often have just one RCD, or none at all.

When RCD work is needed

No RCD at all
Very old boards may have no safety switch. This is a priority upgrade.
Single RCD
One RCD means one trip blacks out the whole house. WA minimum is now two.
Nuisance tripping
RCD trips when you run certain appliances? Usually a wiring fault or overloaded RCD.
Selling or renting
WA rental and sale compliance requires two RCDs on all circuits.

WA RCD requirements

  • All homes: Minimum two RCDs required
  • All circuits: Power and lighting must be protected
  • Rentals: Must comply before tenant moves in
  • Sales: Must comply at settlement

About nuisance tripping

If your RCD trips randomly or when you run certain appliances, there's usually a reason. Common causes are:

  • Faulty appliance leaking current to earth
  • Too many circuits on one RCD (cumulative leakage)
  • Moisture in outdoor fittings or junction boxes
  • Degraded wiring insulation (older homes)

I can fault-find the cause and fix it — whether that's redistributing circuits across multiple RCDs or tracking down the actual fault.
